Scissett Baths are located on the A636 Wakefield Road at Scissett, between Clayton West and Denby Dale. Post code HD8 9HU.
Parking is available in the Phoenox Mills complex, opposite the Swim baths. Please use this to avoid obstructing the cycle course.
Registration will be at the baths, open from 1200 noon. Please register 1 hour prior to your designated swim start time.At Registration you will be given your race number, bike sticker, timing chip, and day licence. BTA members will need to produce their race licence or pay for a day licence at registration. The timing chip attaches round your ankle and is worn throughout the event. This allows your total race time and split times for each section to be recorded electronically and will be available to view immediately after you finish. The changing rooms at the baths have lockers for securing personal belongings during the event. Bike racking will be in the transition area in the rear car park.
Race Briefing: There will be 2 race briefings, one at 1pm and the second at 2pm, either outside or on the pool balcony, depending on the weather.
The Swim: Please be on the poolside 10 minutes before your designated swim time. You will then be given a swim cap to wear. These are different colours to help the Length counters track you.You will start in the water, in the shallow end, there will be no diving. For the safety of all swimmers, tumble turns are not permitted and overtaking will be allowed down the middle of the lane going out towards the deep end. There should be no more than 4 swimmers per lane at any time. Volunteers will be counting your lengths and place a ‘2 lengths to go’ sign in front of you after 16 lengths. However you are still responsible for ensuring you complete the required 18 length.Climb out in the shallow end and make your way along the poolside to exit the rear door towards the car park. Cycle clothing can be left beside your bike or in the changing room, but not on the poolside.
The Cycle: BTA rules require that you must put on a cycle helmet and secure it before taking your bike off the racking. You can then push your bike out of transition to the Mount Line, where a Marshall will signal that you can mount your bike and set off on the cycle route. The left turn into Woodhouse Lane will be clearly marked but not Marshalled, however the other Left hand turns which are from minor to major roads will have Marshalls present. These are Give Way junctions. The Marshalls are present purely to calm traffic approaching the junction to allow you to merge safely. You are still required to abide by the Road Traffic Act and the Marshalls will be instructed not to wave you through. There is one set of sharp bends on the descent into Shelley, which will be clearly signed, but you are warned to slow to a speed that is safe for what you can see.In Skelmanthorpe village there are 2 Zebra crossings, and in Scissett a Pelican Crossing. I shall signpost all 3 to encourage pedestrians to allow priority to competitors, but again you are reminded of the need to comply with the Road Traffic Act. This is a non drafting event, which means that you cannot cycle immediately behind or beside another competitor as this reduces wind resistance, and is considered to be cheating. The race is a registered event with the British Triathlon Federation, and a BTF Referee will be present. Even if you are just taking part as a personal challenge, you must abide by BTF rules. For full rules and an explanation of ‘drafting’, see the rules attachment. At the end of the cycle route, you will be told to dismount to push your bike back into transition. The bike must be racked prior to taking your cycle helmet off. There will be no drinks provided on the cycle route, so you are advised to carry any drink you need with you.
The Run: Drinks will be available outside transition and half way along the run course. The run course takes you round the front of the baths and immediately left for 200 metres up Langley Lane (track), before turning left across the Recreation Ground and then joining Pilling Lane. Please familiarise yourself with the 1st 400m of the run course to avoid any problems during the race, as last year some of the signage was interfered with by local youths. The second half of the run course is on the pavement running alongside the cycle route from Skelmanthorpe. The pavement is wide enough to accommodate both runners and members of the public. Please keep on the pavement to avoid interfering with cyclists on the road.
The Finish: Back at the baths, collect your T shirt, a drink, compare your race times, and support the other competitors. Trophies will be presented as soon as the last competitors are finished.
Assistance: Our sponsor, Bike Shed, the local Cycle shop situated 100m from the Baths on Wakefield Road, will be open from 11 am until 2pm for any last minute problems or purchases. Also Steve Rimmer from Podium Sports will be present during the race offering triathlon equipment for sale, and advice for free. Refreshments will be available at the Mustang Café next door.
